Then we boarded the Harbor Lady for a romantic wedding on the water.

Björklunden Chapel Wedding - Door County

Barbara and Karl's wedding is a true love story. After being sweethearts at a young age, they reconnected and were married along Lake Michigan's waterfront amongst family and friends in an intimate ceremony at the beautiful Boynton Chapel in Björklunden on the Lawrence University Campus in Baileys Harbor, Door County.

The small wooden chapel was built in a late 12th-century Norwegian stave church style and is modeled after the Garmo stave church at Maihaugen in Lillehammer, Norway. It contains numerous hand-painted frescoes and finely carved wood throughout. My portable flash system and lenses allowed me to get some great shots of the special moments of the wedding as well as the interior of the gorgeous chapel without being intrusive.

After the ceremony, we took group and the bridal couple's photos in various locations around the Björklunden property — in front of the chapel, along the waterfront and in the woods before heading to the Waterfront Restaurant in Sister Bay for the reception.

It was a lovely wedding, and it was a wonderful experience being able to capture the romance and joy of Barbara and Karl's special day.

After the ceremony we headed to sandy beaches of a nature preserve near the Coast Guard station in Sturgeon Bay for some great outdoor pictures, and then returned for their reception in the garden.

It was cold day in Door County. The first snowflakes of the season were starting to fall. Adam and Sarah made the trip up from Illinois to shoot their engagement photos. They wanted to do something different and take their photos outside in the snow.

The Story
Adam and Sarah met in college and stayed distant friends until they reconnected on Facebook. They lived hours apart, but something drew them closer. He likes trying new beers, and she enjoys wine tasting. They both like to share time over a cup of coffee. She makes him blush, and he makes her laugh. It felt a bit warmer in Wisconsin that day.

The Inn at Cedar Crossing

I was contracted by 1 Design Source to take pictures of the Inn for their website redesign. My goal was to show the comfort and uniqueness of the Inn's rooms.

The Inn At Cedar Crossing is located at 336 Louisiana Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235. If your are visiting Sturgeon Bay, it is a must stop. They bake their own breads and pastries and feature an upscale dinning room along with a classic bar.

Flowers Series: Tulips & Irises

The tulip, or lale (from Persian لاله, lâleh) as it is also called in Turkey, is a flower indigenous to Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and other parts of Central Asia.

Iris is a genus of between 200-300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species.

All of the beautiful flowers I have photographed are from Sturgeon Bay Florist. They always have a wonderful selection of fresh flowers as you can see from my pictures.

Flower Series: Oriental Lily

The Oriental Lily Tiger Woods, ‘Lilium’, is a fabulous Oriental Lily that has classic white petals with red stripes down the centers.
I had fun shooting the flowers. It was relaxing.

New Studio Space & Bringing Spring

It's been a busy off season, getting ready for Spring and Summer. In December, I leased studio space. It is a nice sized space that allows me to shoot both large groups and individual portraits with ease. And it also has an area for a small office where I can meet with clients.

One room of the studio I painted all black, and the other room is painted all white with floor to ceiling windows on the south wall. The natural light is awesome.

I use the black room for most of my formal portrait work and product shots. The all black room gives me total control of the light. Even if I choose to use a white backdrop, the black walls suck up any fall off light.

The white room takes all of the beautiful window light and bounces it around the room. The light gets softer as I move to the rear of the room. I use this room for casual portraits and natural light shots.

The Winter here in the "Frozen Tundra" seems to be never ending so I decided to shoot some flowers to get me in the Spring mood.

I used a simple 3-light set up with a couple of reflectors. My goal was to get the steam lit from both sides to separate it from the background. The flower pedals are so thin that you have to really watch the highlights.

I shot this Calla Lily with my new 70-200mm 2.8 lens, shooting at f22, so I was able to retain a good focus even though I was 10 feet away.

I had fun shooting Alaina for her 3-year-old portrait. We got some great shots as she played with the toys in the studio. When it was time to shoot the formal shots, she was ready to go.

(Note: Photographers have plenty of toys for kids to play with. It helps them relax and get use to the studio. And it never hurts to have a little fun.)

Style of Wedding Photography

So many prospective clients now days are asking what is your style of wedding photography photojournalist or traditional?

And after reading this article, I believe my style is illustrative.

I like to tell a story with my photographs, but I like some control. I want my shots for the most part to have a point of focus and be correctly exposed. Because I have a background in studio and fashion, I am comfortable shooting with or without flash, but most importantly I know when and how to use it.

I still shoot the traditional altar returns with friends and family. Most couples whether they know it or not will want those family pictures. It may not be the most creative or intimate shots of the day, but it’s important.
I like to put my wedding party in interesting locations and give them direction. I will position the couple and then let them go. I get some great shots of the two of them interacting. I will throw in some directions here and there to keep it moving.

Yacht Launch: The Clifford II

The Clifford II left Sturgeon bay today around 11am. I headed out to the Coast Guard Station to catch a few shots. The skys were overcast but the boat looked amazing. Those guys at Palmer Johnson's sure know how to build boats.

Friday August 8th, I headed up to the Landmark Resort in Door County, Wisconsin to photograph the wedding of Matt & Jamie. I arrived early it gave me the chance to meet Matt and Jamie and get some great pre-wedding shots.

The wedding was held out doors. The weather was beautiful blue skies with big puffy white clouds. The ceremony was perfect. Matt and Jamie both play golf, so we headed over to the Alpine and took some fun shots of Jamie helped Matt with his swing.

It was a lot of fun getting to know Matt and Jamie and to be able to shoot their wedding.
