Located on Lake Michigan, Gordon Lodge has beautiful water views of both the sunrise and sunset. The quirky but luxurious lodge has a mid-century modern, rustic retreat vibe. From sentimental touches that reminded them of family to rustic wedding details that spoke to why they love Door County, these two shared their fun-loving and thoughtful personalities with those they love.
Below, among the photos, you can read Courtney's words describing her theme and special memories.
“The Wedding festivities began on Friday evening as we hosted a Welcome Gathering at the Boat House located below Top Deck Restaurant at Gordon Lodge. All of our wedding guests were invited for dinner and drinks. Guests enjoyed live music and it was a great way for everyone to get to meet each other.
“Beautiful arrangement of white and green flowers designed by Helena at Flora. At the base of the bouquet, I had my Grandmother Shaw’s hankie wrapped around where I held the flowers. She is no longer with us so this was a great way to remember her on such a special day and it also served as my something blue.
“Gordon Lodge has the most breathtaking views of North Bay. My husband’s family has a home in Sister Bay and when we started dating we would travel frequently to Door County. Gordon’s was one of the first spots he took me in Door County to listen to live music and watch the sunset. I knew from the first time going there, if we were to ever get married I would want it to be right here!
“The grounds of Gordon Lodge are beautiful, thus being said, I wanted as much of the wedding to be outdoors. I didn’t want to take away from the location and views, so went very minimal on decorations and very natural and neutral with the wedding colors and flowers; greens and white. The ceremony took place at 3:00 on the north lawn overlooking Lake Michigan.
“My best memory would be my dad walking me down the aisle, and the burst of emotions that took over. The feelings were surreal and it was at that moment it really hit me that this was it, all the planning and worrying is over, and everything I had planned and envisioned was a reality.
“Cocktail hour immediately followed the ceremony on the front lawn of the event center which again has beautiful views of the lake. The reception followed at 5:00pm.
“The reception was held at the event center at Gordon Lodge. For the décor was I was going for a vintage simplistic look with elegance. Each table arrangement was a little different, ranging from tall cylinder vases with large arrangements of baby’s breath to smaller vases of mixed green flowers and hydrangeas. I had votive candles lit everywhere. I had displayed both parents wedding pictures along with each of our grandparents wedding pictures, this was my favorite touch!
“Tony Gorham did an amazing job with our wedding cake! We served Carrot Cake and again I was going for a simple but elegant look! It was a 3 tiered cake with white cream cheese frosting. Along the bottom I had a wreath of baby’s breath. The cake toppers were a favorite touch as we had the bride and groom with a black lab, representing our “kid” Nixon.
“For dinner, we served Char-Grilled Rib-eye Steak, Chicken Aristocrat, and Vegetable Ravioli
“One of Brandon’s groomsmen surprised us with a serenade of Vanilla Ice’s song Ice Ice Baby. The dance floor immediately filled up as we all sang and danced around. It was most meaningful to me, having my family and friends travel so far to celebrate our special day.
Courtney's best advice to future brides and grooms planning a Door County wedding: “Use vendors who’ve been referred to you. We were given a preferred vendor list with many options. We were able to talk to each person, look at their previous work and determine which vendors would be the best fit for the day we envisioned. This helped make the day run so smoothly and carefree.”
